There&#039;s no law that says you have to grab the bottom E with your thumb when you make an F formation.  You can bar it and do just as well.

A lot of guitar teachers will tell you never to do it.

In fact, most of the time when you pick off that formation, a bar chord will be better because it frees your pinky to fret melody notes.  

If your bass picking pattern is from the E string to the D string, change it up to the E string, A string.  Or you can simply go E-E and get a drone effect.
