Guitar Lesson: Spoonful by Reverend Gary Davis

The earliest version of Spoonful I know of is by Charley Patton. This version, taught by Ernie Hawkins, is by the Reverend Gary Davis. It’s an easy one that sounds great. You can hear a sample of Davis performing it here.

Enjoy yourself.

Here’s part one:

Here’s part two.

Lighnin’ Hopkins Shining Moon Lesson by Ernie Hawkins

Here’s Mr. Lightnin’ Hopkins performing Shining Moon and Ernie Hawkins breaking it down for you. Note: The guitar is tuned down one whole note, so the song winds up in the key of G using A chord formations.

Deep River Blues Guitar Lesson and Tab

Best Fingerpicking Book

Highly Recommended

Deep River Blues was first done by the Delmore Brothers, though I suspect that the song may be even older. It’s a bright, jumpy blues that has a nice laid back, I don’t much give a damn feel.

It sounds harder than it is.

Here’s part 1 of a first class lesson by Brian Curran.

..and here’s part 2.

Here’s the Maestro playing it:

Here’s the tab.

Here’s some lessons in Doc Watson’s style.

Enjoy.

Play the Blues Like Lightnin’ Hopkins: Lesson in E

Best Fingerpicking Book

Highly Recommended

800px-LightningHopkinsHere’s a great lesson in playing the blues in the key of E by none other than the fabulous Stefan Grossman. There are a ton of good ideas here for people looking to learn to improvise; lots of LIghtnin’ Hopkins inspired licks.   Have fun with this one . It’s just plain enjoyable to play along with Grossman and answer his licks with your own.

Enjoy.

Freight Train Guitar Lesson and Tab

This is a pretty slick version of Freight Train as played by Tommy Emmanuel, a gifted and amazing guitarist. The lesson is split into three screens so that you can see both the right and left hands. Freight Train is the first song most fingerpickers learn, and most continue to work on it all their lives getting better and better at it.

The teacher is a gentleman who calls himself only Asagtr and is no slouch on the guitar himself.

Download the tab to Tommy Emmanuel’s Freight Train.
